Parts of a gable box with handle

A gable box is a carry box with a pitched roof, like a little house, and a handle cut into the two roof panels that meet at the top. It needs no bag, so it is popular for cakes, pastries, bakery treats, party favours and small gifts. It folds from one sheet of paperboard and ships flat. In the studio the roof and handle follow fixed proportions, and the bottom closes with slotted flaps.

Walls
Front, back and two side walls. The side walls rise to a point to form the gable ends.
Roof panels
Two sloping panels that fold up from the front and back walls and meet at the ridge.
Handle panels
Stand up back to back above the ridge, each with a die-cut grip.
Bottom flaps
Four flaps that fold in to close the base.
Glue flap
Joins the wall strip into a tube.

How to size it

  1. Measure the product: length, width, height. For a cake, include the cake board.
  2. Add 3 to 5 mm on length and width so the product can be lowered in, and a few millimetres on height.
  3. Enter Inside sizes in the studio. The roof and handle add to the total height, which is shown under the fields.
  4. Check that the product can go in through the top opening before the roof is closed.

Materials and finishes

White paperboard, 300 to 400 gsm
Bakery and gift gable boxes. Heavier gsm for heavier contents.
Kraft board
Natural look for bakeries and gift shops.

Finishes

Food-safe coating or liner
For greasy or moist food, ask about grease-resistant board or use a liner.
Varnish
Basic protection; many gable boxes are printed one or two colours only.

Mistakes to avoid

  • A heavy product on a slotted bottom. Production gable boxes for heavier items often use a crash-lock bottom; ask your printer.
  • Artwork across the handle cut-out, which is removed when the die cuts the grip.
  • Placing the logo on the roof only. It tilts away from view; the front and side walls are seen more.
  • Food in direct contact with board not meant for it. For food packaging sold in India, check the current FSSAI requirements.

How to make it in the studio

  1. Open it. Press Customise this gable box with handle. It opens in the 3D studio at 160 x 100 x 90 mm.
  2. Set the size. In the Size panel, choose whether you are entering the Inside or Outside size, then type your measurements. The other one is shown underneath.
  3. Add your design. In the Design panel, upload your logo or artwork: it goes on the front first. Pick other faces to add colours, text or images to each.
  4. Check it in 3D. Turn the pack around, and use the Flat to Closed slider to watch it fold. Switch to the Dieline view to see the artwork on the dieline.
  5. Download. The Download panel gives you the PDF dieline to send your printer first, then mockup images for your store or social posts.
  6. Get it made. If you want a quote, send the design to packitmama from the Download panel, and we will reply personally.

Questions

Can I change the roof shape?

Not on this template. The roof and handle follow fixed proportions based on the box size.

Is it strong enough for a cake?

For a light cake, often yes with a stiff board. For heavier cakes, a bakery box with a lid or a lock bottom is safer.
