Grocery paper bag: what to know
A grocery or SOS (self-opening square) bag has no handles and a flat square base that opens with a flick. Bakeries use it for bread and buns, and grocers for loose items.
- Choose the width and gusset from the loaf or the largest item, and the height so the top can be folded over.
- A single colour logo on kraft paper is the usual print.
- For oily or buttery bakes, ask for a greaseproof or food-grade lined paper.
Parts of a paper shopping bag
A paper shopping bag is a gusseted bag with a flat bottom and handles. It carries the purchase home and keeps showing the brand on the street afterwards. In the studio you choose twisted rope, flat paper, ribbon or die-cut handles, or none for a grocery bag, and add a top turn-over, tissue paper and eyelets. The front, back and gussets all take artwork.
- Front and back panels
- The two large faces and the main print areas.
- Side gussets
- The folded sides that open out as the bag fills. Their depth is the Gusset in the studio.
- Bottom
- The folded base. Bags for heavy goods add a card insert to keep it flat.
- Top turn-over
- A band of paper folded inside at the top, which strengthens the handle area.
- Handles
- Rope, flat paper, ribbon or a die-cut slot. Eyelets reinforce the holes on rope and ribbon bags.
How to size it
- Measure the largest item (or the boxed item) the bag must carry: width, depth and height.
- Set the bag width a little wider than the item and the gusset at least as deep as the item.
- Set the height so the item sits below the turn-over, leaving room for tissue paper if you use it.
- Use the studio views to check the proportions, then download the print area, which includes the turn-over and handle holes.
| For | Size (L x W x H) |
|---|---|
| Jewellery, cosmetics | 180 x 80 x 220 mm (width x gusset x height) |

| Large garments, gift sets | 350 x 120 x 400 mm |
Materials and finishes
- Kraft paper, 80 to 150 gsm
- Everyday retail and grocery bags. Strong and natural looking.
- White kraft or coated art paper, 150 to 250 gsm
- Premium retail bags with full-colour print, often laminated.
Finishes
- Matte or gloss lamination
- Protects coated art paper bags from scuffs and light rain.
- Foil stamping
- A gold or silver logo on premium bags.
Mistakes to avoid
- A gusset shallower than the item, so the bag bulges and the bottom tears.
- Logos placed across the gusset fold or near the handle holes, where they crease or are punched through.
- Paper too light for the weight carried. Tell your supplier the heaviest load the bag must hold.
- Forgetting the turn-over: artwork at the very top folds inside the bag.
How to make it in the studio
- Open it. Press Customise this grocery paper bag. It opens in the 3D studio at 260 x 330 x 120 mm.
- Set the size. In the Size panel, pick a preset or type your own measurements.
- Add your design. In the Design panel, upload your logo or artwork: it goes on the front first. Pick other faces to add colours, text or images to each.
- Check it in 3D. Turn the pack around. Switch to the flat print view to see the artwork on the print layout.
- Download. The Download panel gives you the print template first, then mockup images for your store or social posts.
- Get it made. If you want a quote, send the design to packitmama from the Download panel, and we will reply personally.
