Shipping carton: what to know
The plain brown shipping carton is used for courier shipments, bulk orders, outer cartons and storage. Most brands need only a few sizes.
- Size cartons from your most common orders. Two or three sizes often cover most shipments.
- Couriers charge on volumetric weight, so a tight-fitting carton saves money on every parcel.
- Tell your supplier the packed weight and how high cartons will be stacked; they will suggest ply and board grade.
- A one-colour logo printed in flexo on brown board is the usual, affordable way to brand a shipping carton.
Parts of a FEFCO 0201 slotted carton
The regular slotted carton, FEFCO 0201, is the plain brown shipping box. It is one piece of corrugated board with a glued side joint and four flaps at each end. The outer flaps are half the box width, so they meet in the middle and are closed with tape. It uses board efficiently, ships flat, and comes in almost any size, which is why it is the default box for shipping, storage and outer cartons.
- Side panels
- The four walls: two long panels and two short panels, in one strip.
- Manufacturer's joint
- The glue (or stitch) flap that joins the last panel to the first. It arrives already joined.
- Major flaps
- The flaps on the long panels. They meet in the middle of the top and bottom.
- Minor flaps
- The flaps on the short panels. They fold in first, under the major flaps.
- Slots
- Narrow cuts between the flaps that let them fold without tearing.
How to size it
- Shipping cartons are specified by inside size, length x width x height, where length and width are the opening and length is the longer side.
- Measure the product or the stack of inner boxes, then add room for any padding, bubble wrap or dividers.
- Enter those as Inside sizes in the studio. The outside size grows with the flute thickness and is shown under the fields.
- Keep it as small as the contents allow. Couriers charge by the larger of real and volumetric weight, often length x width x height in cm divided by 5000.
| For | Size (L x W x H) |
|---|---|
| Small courier box | 200 x 150 x 150 mm |
| General shipping | 300 x 200 x 200 mm |
| Cube box | 300 x 300 x 300 mm |
| Large or moving box | 450 x 350 x 300 mm |
Materials and finishes
- 3-ply corrugated, B-flute (about 3 mm)
- Single wall. Most light and medium e-commerce shipments.
- 3-ply corrugated, C-flute (about 4 mm)
- More cushioning and stacking strength than B-flute at the same ply.
- 5-ply corrugated (double wall)
- Heavy products, bulk outer cartons and boxes that will be stacked high.
- Kraft liner grades (gsm and BF)
- In India, cartons are usually specified by ply count plus paper weight in gsm and bursting factor (BF). Ask your supplier for the grades that suit your load.
Finishes
- Flexo print, one or two colours
- The usual print for shipping cartons: logo, handling marks and address panel.
- Litho-laminated print
- A full-colour printed sheet laminated onto corrugated, for retail-ready cartons. Much more costly than flexo.
Mistakes to avoid
- Ordering by outside size when the supplier quotes inside size, or the other way round. Always say which one you mean.
- An oversized carton that needs a lot of filler and costs more to ship.
- Fine detail or photographic artwork on plain corrugated. Flexo on brown board suits bold, simple artwork.
- Choosing board grade by guesswork. Tell the supplier the weight of the packed box and how high it will be stacked.
How to make it in the studio
- Open it. Press Customise this shipping carton. It opens in the 3D studio at 300 x 200 x 200 mm.
- Set the size. In the Size panel, choose whether you are entering the Inside or Outside size, then type your measurements. The other one is shown underneath.
- Add your design. In the Design panel, upload your logo or artwork: it goes on the front first. Pick other faces to add colours, text or images to each.
- Check it in 3D. Turn the pack around, and use the Flat to Closed slider to watch it fold. Switch to the Dieline view to see the artwork on the dieline.
- Download. The Download panel gives you the PDF dieline to send your printer first, then mockup images for your store or social posts.
- Get it made. If you want a quote, send the design to packitmama from the Download panel, and we will reply personally.
