Parts of a noodle and takeaway box

A noodle box is a tapered paper pail with four flaps that fold in and lock across the top. It holds hot, saucy food without leaking for a short trip, stacks in a delivery bag, and is familiar from Chinese takeaway. In India it is used for noodles, fried rice, biryani portions, pasta and salads. The narrow floor and wider top make it easy to eat from.

Floor
The base. In the studio, L and W are the floor size; the walls flare out from it.
Walls
Four sloping walls. The front and back carry most of the artwork.
Top flaps
Four flaps that fold in over the food. Production boxes add tabs that lock them closed.
Glue corners
Folded gussets that seal the corners so sauce does not leak.

How to size it

  1. Noodle boxes are sold by capacity in ounces. Fill a container with your portion and measure the volume in ml.
  2. Set the floor size (L and W) and the height, then adjust the wall taper (0 to 20 degrees) in the studio.
  3. The top grows with the taper and height; the closed size is shown in the studio. Check it fits your delivery bag.
  4. Switch the Top option between Closing flaps and Open to see both versions.
Common starting sizes
ForSize (L x W x H)
16 oz (small)about 470 ml (a side or a light meal)
26 oz (medium)about 770 ml (a single main portion)
32 oz (large)about 950 ml (a large or sharing portion)

Materials and finishes

Food-grade white paperboard, PE coated inside
The standard. The coating holds sauce and steam.
Food-grade kraft paperboard, coated
A natural look; prints darker than white board.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Ordering by guesswork: a half-full box looks stingy and a full one spills. Fill a sample with your portion first.
  • Artwork that crosses the corner gussets, where it folds inward and disappears.
  • Uncoated board for saucy food: it softens and can leak at the corners.
  • Fine text near the top flaps, which crease and curl when the box is closed.

How to make it in the studio

  1. Open it. Press Customise this kraft takeaway container. It opens in the 3D studio at 150 x 110 x 65 mm.
  2. Set the size. In the Size panel, choose whether you are entering the Inside or Outside size, then type your measurements. The other one is shown underneath.
  3. Add your design. In the Design panel, upload your logo or artwork: it goes on the front first. Pick other faces to add colours, text or images to each.
  4. Check it in 3D. Turn the pack around, and use the Flat to Closed slider to watch it fold. Switch to the Dieline view to see the artwork on the dieline.
  5. Download. The Download panel gives you the PDF dieline to send your printer first, then mockup images for your store or social posts.
  6. Get it made. If you want a quote, send the design to packitmama from the Download panel, and we will reply personally.

Questions

What does 16 oz mean on a noodle box?

It is the capacity in US fluid ounces: 16 oz is about 470 ml. It is a volume, not a weight of food.

Can I get a handle?

Wire handles are common on noodle boxes but the studio does not draw them. Ask your supplier.
