12 inch pizza box: what to know

The 12 inch box is the large size on many menus. It is set up here at 310 x 310 x 40 mm inside.

  • For stuffed crust or deep toppings, raise the height to 45 or 50 mm so the cheese does not stick to the lid.
  • Larger boxes flex more. If they are stacked high in a delivery bag, ask your supplier about B-flute.
  • Put the phone number or ordering link on the lid where it is seen at the door.

Parts of a pizza box

A pizza box is a wide, shallow corrugated box with a hinged lid that tucks into the front. It folds flat for storage, sets up in seconds at the counter, and has to keep a hot, greasy pizza level and intact on the back of a delivery bike. Boxes are named by the pizza they hold, in inches, so a 12 inch box is sized for a 12 inch pizza with a little room around it.

Base
The square floor the pizza sits on. Its inside size is what the pizza has to fit.
Side and front walls
Short walls that fold up around the base. The front wall takes the lid tuck.
Lid
Hinged at the back wall. This is the main print area and what the customer sees first.
Tuck flap
The front edge of the lid that slides inside the front wall to close the box.
Dust flaps
Small flaps on the sides of the lid that fold in and keep the heat and steam inside.

How to size it

  1. Start from the pizza diameter in inches and convert: 1 inch is 25.4 mm.
  2. Add about 10 to 25 mm to the diameter for the inside length and width, so the pizza can be slid in and lifted out without tearing.
  3. Allow 40 to 50 mm of inside height for most pizzas; deep-dish and stuffed-crust pizzas need more.
  4. Enter the inside sizes in the studio and use the Flat to Closed slider to check that the lid closes cleanly.

Materials and finishes

E-flute corrugated, kraft liner
The everyday delivery box: light, folds neatly, and holds heat well enough for a short trip.
B-flute corrugated
Larger pizzas (14 inch and up) or boxes that get stacked several high in a delivery bag.
White top liner
Full-colour lid artwork prints brighter than on brown kraft.

Finishes

One or two spot colours on kraft
The usual pizza box print: a logo, phone number and a pattern. Cheap and quick to set up.
Food-grade liner or greaseproof sheet
Corrugated board soaks up oil. A liner under the pizza keeps the base from going soft and stained.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Sizing the box to the pizza exactly: a tight box tears the crust and smears the toppings on the way out.
  • A lid that is too low: the cheese sticks to the inside of the lid. Check the height against your thickest pizza.
  • Putting key details close to the lid edges and fold lines, where corrugated board cracks the print. Keep 10 mm clear.
  • Ordering one size for every pizza: a small pizza slides around in a large box and arrives with its toppings in a corner.
  • Printing ink on the inside face that touches food. Keep the inside unprinted or ask your printer for food-safe inks.

How to make it in the studio

  1. Open it. Press Customise this 12 inch pizza box. It opens in the 3D studio at 310 x 310 x 40 mm.
  2. Set the size. In the Size panel, choose whether you are entering the Inside or Outside size, then type your measurements. The other one is shown underneath.
  3. Add your design. In the Design panel, upload your logo or artwork: it goes on the top first. Pick other faces to add colours, text or images to each.
  4. Check it in 3D. Turn the pack around, and use the Flat to Closed slider to watch it fold. Switch to the Dieline view to see the artwork on the dieline.
  5. Download. The Download panel gives you the PDF dieline to send your printer first, then mockup images for your store or social posts.
  6. Get it made. If you want a quote, send the design to packitmama from the Download panel, and we will reply personally.

Questions

What box do I need for a 12 inch pizza?

Around 310 x 310 x 40 mm inside is a common starting point. Measure your actual pizza, since hand-stretched bases vary.

Why do some pizza boxes have holes?

Vent holes let steam out so the crust stays crisp. The studio dieline does not draw them; ask your printer to add them.

Can I print the inside of the lid?

Yes, many brands do. Keep the floor, which touches the food, unprinted.
