Parts of a magnetic flip-lid box

A magnetic box, also called a book box or flip-lid box, is a rigid box with a lid hinged at the back and a front flap that closes over the base. Thin magnets hidden under the wrap hold the flap shut. It opens like a book, feels heavy and solid, and is one of the most common premium gift formats: perfume, watches, dry fruits, tea sets and corporate gifts. It is made from greyboard wrapped in printed paper and is delivered already made up.

Base tray

The rigid tray that holds the product. Design to its inside size.

Hinged cover

One piece of board that wraps around the back and over the top of the base, glued to the back wall.

Front flap

Folds down over the front of the base. Magnets under the wrap in the flap and front wall hold it closed.

Wrap

The printed paper glued over the greyboard. Your artwork goes here.

Insert (optional)

Foam, card or moulded tray inside the base to hold each item.

How to size it

1. Measure the product or the full set of items laid out as they will sit in the insert.
2. Add 2 to 3 mm on each side for a snug fit, more if there is a thick insert or tissue.
3. Enter Inside sizes in the studio. The cover overhangs the base, so the outside size is shown under the fields.
4. Pick the Front flap option: Magnetic flap for the classic closure, Full-height flap to cover the whole front, or None for a book-style lid.

Materials and finishes

Greyboard 1.5 to 2.5 mm, wrapped in printed paper

The standard build. Thicker board for larger or heavier boxes.

Art paper wrap, around 120 to 170 gsm

Printed in full colour, then usually laminated so it does not crack at the edges.

Textured or speciality paper wrap

Linen-finish, kraft or coloured papers for a premium feel, often with foil instead of full print.

Finishes

Matte or soft-touch lamination

Protects the wrap and gives a premium feel. Gloss shows scuffs more.

Foil stamping and embossing

Gold or silver logos, raised or debossed details on the cover.

Ribbon pull or ribbon tie

A ribbon under the insert helps lift items out; a tie adds a gift touch.

Mistakes to avoid

• Printing the dieline instead of the wrap. The studio shows the board blank; production magnetic boxes print a separate wrap sheet, which your box maker lays out.
• Forgetting the cover is larger than the base. The cover overhangs by a few millimetres so it closes neatly.
• Artwork that crosses the hinge with fine detail. The paper bends there, so text can crack or distort.
• Underestimating freight. Rigid boxes arrive assembled, so they take far more space in transit than flat cartons.

How to make it in the studio

1. Open it. Press Customise this perfume gift box. It opens in the 3D studio at 120 x 70 x 160 mm.
2. Set the size. In the Size panel, choose whether you are entering the Inside or Outside size, then type your measurements. The other one is shown underneath.
3. Add your design. In the Design panel, upload your logo or artwork: it goes on the front first. Pick other faces to add colours, text or images to each.
4. Check it in 3D. Turn the pack around, and use the Flat to Closed slider to watch it fold. Switch to the Dieline view to see the artwork on the dieline.
5. Download. The Download panel gives you the PDF dieline to send your printer first, then mockup images for your store or social posts.
