Parts of a hexagonal or octagonal box
A hexagonal box is a six-sided tuck box with polygon-shaped lids at each end, and the octagon version has eight sides. The shape stands out on a shelf and in a gift hamper, and it suits round products such as candles, tea tins, jars and rolled items, which fit snugly inside the angled walls. It takes a little more board than a square box of the same capacity and the angled creases need a careful die.
- Wall panels
- Six (or eight) equal side panels in one strip.
- Glue flap
- Joins the last wall to the first, making the tube.
- Top lid
- A polygon flap that folds over the top, with a tuck that slides inside.
- Bottom
- A polygon flap with a tuck, closing the base the same way.
- Small flaps
- Narrow flaps on the other walls that fold under each lid and support it.
How to size it
- In the studio, the size is Width across flats (from one flat wall to the opposite wall) and Height.
- For a round product, set width across flats to the product diameter plus 2 to 3 mm.
- For height, add 2 to 3 mm above the product, including any lid.
- Choose Hexagon or Octagon in the Sides option. The octagon is closer to round and holds a cylinder with less play.
Materials and finishes
- White paperboard, 300 to 400 gsm
- Most hexagon gift boxes. Stiffer board keeps the shape crisp.
- Kraft board
- Natural look for candles, tea and handmade goods.
Finishes
- Matte lamination
- Protects the corners, which take a lot of handling.
- Foil stamping
- A logo on the top lid for festive and gift versions.
Mistakes to avoid
- Measuring corner to corner instead of across the flats. The box will come out larger than you expect.
- Artwork placed without checking which panel faces forward. Check the 3D view and turn it round before you download.
- Thin board that lets the walls bow outward, losing the crisp shape.
- Expecting face artwork on every angled wall. Front, back and (on the octagon) sides take face artwork; the other walls take a full-sheet design or background colour.
How to make it in the studio
- Open it. Press Customise this octagonal box. It opens in the 3D studio at 80 x 120 mm.
- Set the size. In the Size panel, choose whether you are entering the Inside or Outside size, then type your measurements. The other one is shown underneath.
- Add your design. In the Design panel, upload your logo or artwork: it goes on the front first. Pick other faces to add colours, text or images to each.
- Check it in 3D. Turn the pack around, and use the Flat to Closed slider to watch it fold. Switch to the Dieline view to see the artwork on the dieline.
- Download. The Download panel gives you the PDF dieline to send your printer first, then mockup images for your store or social posts.
- Get it made. If you want a quote, send the design to packitmama from the Download panel, and we will reply personally.
Questions
Hexagon or octagon?
Hexagon is the classic look and simpler to fold. Octagon holds round products more snugly.
