Parts of a spiral notebook
A spiral or wire-bound notebook opens flat and folds back on itself, which makes it a favourite for planners, journals, school and corporate gifts. The covers are separate sheets held by the wire, so there is no spine to print. The studio has A5, A4 and B6 sizes with printed front and back covers, enough to try a cover design in 3D and download the cover layout for your printer.
- Front cover
- The main design. A separate sheet, punched along the binding edge.
- Back cover
- Often a plain colour, a pattern or the brand details. Also punched.
- Binding edge
- The strip where the holes are punched for the wire. Nothing important should sit here.
- Wire or coil
- Twin-loop wire (wire-o) or a single spiral coil, chosen to suit the thickness.
- Inside pages
- Ruled, dotted, grid or plain. The studio shows the page block, not the page designs.
How to size it
- Pick A5, A4 or B6, then set the thickness to suit the page count.
- Add 3 mm bleed on all sides of each cover.
- Keep text and logos at least 10 to 12 mm from the binding edge, where the holes and wire go, and 5 mm from the other edges.
- Make cover images about 300 dpi at the cover size.
| For | Size (L x W x H) |
|---|---|
| B6 pocket | 128 x 182 mm (the Japanese B6 size; ISO B6 is a little smaller, 125 x 176 mm) |
| A5 | 148 x 210 mm (the most common notebook size) |
| A4 | 210 x 297 mm |
Materials and finishes
- Board covers, about 300 to 400 gsm
- The usual printed cover; laminate it for daily use.
- Kraft board
- A natural, eco look. Light colours and fine detail show less on brown.
- Polypropylene (PP) covers
- Water-resistant and flexible, for school and field notebooks.
- Inside pages, about 70 to 100 gsm
- Heavier pages reduce ink showing through for fountain pens and markers.
Finishes
- Matte lamination
- Protects the cover from handling and moisture.
- Foil or spot UV logo
- A premium touch for corporate gift notebooks.
Mistakes to avoid
- A logo or title on the binding edge: the holes punch straight through it.
- Too thin a cover: it bends and tears at the holes. Use heavy board or PP.
- Wire too small for the page count: the notebook will not turn smoothly. Your binder picks the wire size from the thickness.
How to make it in the studio
- Open it. Press Customise this spiral notebook A5. It opens in the 3D studio at 148 x 210 x 12 mm.
- Set the size. In the Size panel, pick a preset or type your own measurements.
- Add your design. In the Design panel, upload your logo or artwork: it goes on the front first. Pick other faces to add colours, text or images to each.
- Check it in 3D. Turn the pack around. Switch to the flat print view to see the artwork on the print file.
- Download. The Download panel gives you the print template first, then mockup images for your store or social posts.
- Get it made. If you want a quote, send the design to packitmama from the Download panel, and we will reply personally.
Questions
Wire-o or spiral coil?
Wire-o (twin loop) looks neater and is common for planners and corporate notebooks; a coil is flexible and common on school notebooks.
Can I print the spine?
There is no spine on a wire-bound notebook. If you want a printed spine, use the book template with a paperback binding.
