Parts of a greeting card

A greeting card is one sheet folded in half: outside back and front, and two inside pages. It is used for thank-you cards in parcels, festival greetings, invitations and brand inserts. The studio shows the card standing open at any angle, with A6, A5, square and 5 x 7 in sizes and three paper weights, and lays out the outside and inside spreads for printing.

Front
The cover people see first: the main image or greeting.
Back
Usually quiet: a small logo, a website or a social handle.
Inside left and right
The message pages. Often one is left blank for a handwritten note.
Fold (score)
The crease down the middle. Heavy card is scored before folding so it does not crack.

How to size it

  1. Pick the folded size in the studio. The flat sheet is twice as wide: an A6 card prints on an A5 sheet.
  2. Add 3 mm bleed on the outer edges and keep text 5 mm inside the trim and away from the fold.
  3. Remember the outside spread prints back then front, so the back is on the left of the flat sheet.
  4. Pick the envelope to match: an A6 card fits a C6 envelope (114 x 162 mm), and a 5 x 7 in card fits an A7 invitation envelope.
Common starting sizes

A6 folded105 x 148 mm (printed on A5, fits C6 envelopes)
A5 folded148 x 210 mm (printed on A4, fits C5 envelopes)

Materials and finishes

Uncoated card, about 300 to 350 gsm
Easy to write on with any pen. The usual choice for greeting and thank-you cards.
Coated card
Brighter photos and colour. Ballpoint pens work; some gel and fountain pens smudge.
Textured or handmade paper
Wedding and festival invitations with a crafted feel.

Finishes

Foil
Gold or rose-gold details for festivals and weddings.
Scoring
Needed on heavy card so the fold is clean. Most printers include it with folding.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Front and back swapped on the flat sheet: the card opens the wrong way. Check the layout before you send it.
  • Dark solid colour across the fold: it can crack and show white. Score the card, laminate it, or keep the fold area lighter.
  • A square card in a standard envelope: it does not fit, and square envelopes can cost more to post. Check postal rules first.
  • Coated or laminated inside pages: many pens smudge. Keep the writing side uncoated.

How to make it in the studio

  1. Open it. Press Customise this square greeting card. It opens in the 3D studio at 150 x 150 mm.
  2. Set the size. In the Size panel, pick a preset or type your own measurements.
  3. Add your design. In the Design panel, upload your logo or artwork: it goes on the front first. Pick other faces to add colours, text or images to each.
  4. Check it in 3D. Turn the pack around. Switch to the flat print view to see the artwork on the print file.
  5. Download. The Download panel gives you the print template first, then mockup images for your store or social posts.
  6. Get it made. If you want a quote, send the design to packitmama from the Download panel, and we will reply personally.
