Parts of a hang tag
A hang tag (swing tag) is the small card tied or tagged to a product: clothing, bags, jewellery, candles, gift hampers. It carries the brand, the size and price, and often a short line about how it was made. The studio has four common sizes in clipped, square or rounded shapes, a real punched hole, and an optional string, with artwork on both sides.
- Front
- The brand side: logo, name and a little design.
- Back
- Details: product name, size, price, care or a short story. Often left with space for a price sticker.
- Hole
- A punched hole near the top for the string or tagging pin.
- Corners
- Clipped corners are the classic tag look; rounded corners feel softer; square is the simplest cut.
- String
- Cotton thread, jute or ribbon. Tagging guns use plastic fasteners instead.
How to size it
- Pick a size in the studio. 50 x 90 mm and 55 x 100 mm suit clothing; 40 x 70 mm suits gifts and jewellery.
- Add 3 mm bleed and keep text 4 to 5 mm inside the trim.
- Keep a clear zone of about 5 mm around the hole: nothing important should sit near it.
- Make the back text at least about 6 to 7 pt, so price and size can be read easily.
| For | Size (L x W x H) |
|---|---|
| Gift and jewellery tags | 40 x 70 mm |
| Clothing tags | 50 x 90 mm or 55 x 100 mm |
| Large tags with a story | 70 x 110 mm |
Materials and finishes
- Kraft board, about 300 to 400 gsm
- The natural, handmade look. Dark one-colour print suits it best.
- White board, about 350 to 450 gsm
- Full colour and photos print bright. The studio offers 350 and 450 gsm.
- Thick or duplexed board, about 1 mm
- A premium, stiff tag. The studio luxe 1 mm stock shows this.
Finishes
- Foil stamp or emboss
- A premium logo on fashion and gift tags.
- Matte lamination
- Stops kraft and dark tags from scuffing in shipping.
Mistakes to avoid
- Text or a logo too close to the hole: it gets punched through or hidden by the string.
- Printing the price into the artwork: every price change needs a reprint. Leave a space for a price sticker.
- Thin board: the tag bends and tears at the hole. Use 350 gsm or more.
- Assuming the tag covers legal details: goods sold packed in India need certain declarations, such as MRP. Check the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules for what applies to you.
How to make it in the studio
- Open it. Press Customise this gift tag. It opens in the 3D studio at 40 x 70 mm.
- Set the size. In the Size panel, pick a preset or type your own measurements.
- Add your design. In the Design panel, upload your logo or artwork: it goes on the front first. Pick other faces to add colours, text or images to each.
- Check it in 3D. Turn the pack around. Switch to the flat print view to see the artwork on the print file.
- Download. The Download panel gives you the print template first, then mockup images for your store or social posts.
- Get it made. If you want a quote, send the design to packitmama from the Download panel, and we will reply personally.
Questions
Kraft or white tag?
Kraft for a natural, handmade feel; white when you need bright colour or photos.
Can the hole be a different size?
The studio uses one standard hole near the top. Your printer can punch a larger hole or add an eyelet; tell them in the brief.
