Parts of a cup, mug or bowl
This template covers drink and food containers that are tapered or round: paper hot cups, clear plastic cups, ceramic mugs, steel tumblers, food bowls and ice cream tubs. Paper and plastic cups are sized in ounces and fitted with stock lids, so you choose a size and design the print around it. The print on a tapered cup is an unrolled fan shape, which the studio lays out for you.
- Wall
- The printed side of the cup, from the rim to the base.
- Rim
- The rolled top edge. Its diameter decides which lids fit.
- Side seam
- Where a paper cup blank overlaps and is sealed. Keep key artwork off it.
- Base
- The bottom disc. Paper cups often carry the material and recycling marks here.
- Lid, sleeve and straw
- Sip, dome or screw lids; a sleeve on paper cups; a straw on plastic cups and tumblers.
How to size it
- Pick the capacity first: paper and plastic cups are sold by fluid ounce, and each size has a standard rim diameter.
- Enter the top width, height and base width of your cup. The style presets are a good start.
- Check the lid size matches the rim before ordering. Lids are usually sold by rim diameter in mm.
- Download the print area: it is the unrolled fan shape of the wall, ready for your cup printer.
| For | Size (L x W x H) |
|---|---|
| 4 oz espresso or chai | about 120 ml (rim about 62 mm) |
| 8 oz small coffee | about 240 ml (rim about 80 mm) |
| 12 oz regular coffee | about 350 ml (rim about 90 mm) |
| 16 oz large coffee, cold drinks | about 470 ml (rim about 90 mm) |
Materials and finishes
- Food-grade paperboard with a PE or water-based lining
- Hot drinks. The lining holds the liquid; double-wall cups add insulation.
- PET (clear plastic)
- Cold drinks, iced coffee and bubble tea. Not for hot drinks.
- Ceramic or stainless steel
- Mugs and tumblers for merchandise and gifting.
Finishes
- Single or double wall
- Double wall keeps hot drinks comfortable to hold without a sleeve.
- Printed sleeve
- Lets you brand plain stock cups, or run a seasonal design on a standard cup.
Mistakes to avoid
- Designing on a rectangle: a tapered cup prints on a fan shape, so a rectangular design comes out distorted.
- A logo across the side seam, where it is split by the overlap.
- Ordering lids by cup capacity rather than rim diameter. Two 16 oz cups can need different lids.
- Text too close to the rim or base, which is rolled or folded under.
How to make it in the studio
- Open it. Press Customise this steel tumbler. It opens in the 3D studio at 75 x 200 x 75 mm.
- Set the size. In the Size panel, pick a preset or type your own measurements.
- Add your design. In the Design panel, upload your logo or artwork: it goes on the front first. Pick other faces to add colours, text or images to each.
- Check it in 3D. Turn the pack around. Switch to the flat print view to see the artwork on the label.
- Download. The Download panel gives you the print template first, then mockup images for your store or social posts.
- Get it made. If you want a quote, send the design to packitmama from the Download panel, and we will reply personally.
