Parts of a envelope
An envelope is the first thing someone sees of a letter, an invoice, an invitation or a card in a parcel. The studio has the standard ISO sizes (DL, C5, C4), an A7 invitation size and the US #10 business size, with pointed, square or wallet flaps, so you can see the closed envelope in 3D and download the flat layout with its side, bottom and seal flaps for printing or cutting.
- Front (address side)
- The flat face with the address, the stamp or postage area, and often a return address or logo.
- Seal flap
- The flap that closes it. Pointed for invitations, square for business, wallet for documents.
- Side flaps
- Fold in from the sides and are glued under the bottom flap.
- Bottom flap
- Folds up and is glued to the side flaps to form the pocket.
- Back
- Where the flaps meet. A logo or pattern on the seal flap is common.
How to size it
- Start from what goes inside. A DL fits an A4 sheet folded in three; a C5 fits A5 flat or A4 folded once; a C4 fits A4 flat.
- Leave a few millimetres of room around the contents, more for thick cards or several sheets.
- Pick the matching size in the studio, then the flap style.
- Keep the address area plain and light so the address and postal marks can be read. Check India Post or your postal service rules for size and printing limits.
| For | Size (L x W x H) |
|---|---|
| DL | 110 x 220 mm (A4 folded in three) |
| C5 | 162 x 229 mm (A5 flat or A4 folded once) |
| C4 | 229 x 324 mm (A4 flat) |
| A7 invitation | 133 x 184 mm (fits 5 x 7 in cards) |
| #10 business (US) | 105 x 241 mm (US letter folded in three) |
Materials and finishes
- Paper, about 90 to 120 gsm
- Everyday business and office envelopes.
- Heavier or textured paper, about 120 to 160 gsm
- Invitations and premium mail. Feels more substantial.
- Kraft paper
- Document envelopes and a natural look.
Finishes
- Peel and seal or gummed flap
- Peel and seal is easier for large mailings; a lick gum is cheaper.
- Window
- For invoices and letters printed with the address. Not modelled in the studio.
Mistakes to avoid
- Dark or busy artwork behind the address: postal sorting and handwriting both struggle with it.
- Printing artwork across glued seams without asking: many envelopes are printed after they are made, which limits how close to the edges ink can go.
- A card that is too tight: it tears the envelope or will not go in. Allow a few millimetres all round.
- Choosing an unusual size or shape without checking postage: it can cost more to send.
How to make it in the studio
- Open it. Press Customise this gift card envelope. It opens in the 3D studio at 120 x 90 mm.
- Set the size. In the Size panel, choose whether you are entering the Inside or Outside size, then type your measurements. The other one is shown underneath.
- Add your design. In the Design panel, upload your logo or artwork: it goes on the front first. Pick other faces to add colours, text or images to each.
- Check it in 3D. Turn the pack around, and use the Flat to Closed slider to watch it fold. Switch to the Dieline view to see the artwork on the dieline.
- Download. The Download panel gives you the PDF dieline to send your printer first, then mockup images for your store or social posts.
- Get it made. If you want a quote, send the design to packitmama from the Download panel, and we will reply personally.
Questions
Which envelope fits an A4 letter?
DL if the letter is folded in three, C5 if folded once, and C4 if it must stay flat.
Can I print the inside of the envelope?
You can design on the back face in the studio. Printing the inside (a liner) is a special job; ask your printer.
Is this a print-ready dieline?
It is a concept layout. Envelope makers have their own flap sizes and glue areas, so ask them to check it.
