Parts of a tin, aerosol or tube
This template covers metal and paper containers that are not drinks cans: ribbed food cans, round and square tins with lids, aerosol spray cans and paper tubes. Food cans carry a paper label; gift tins are usually printed on the metal; paper tubes are wrapped in a printed sheet. Pick the style in the studio and design the wrap around the body, and the lid top where there is one.
- Body
- The straight wall. The print area, all the way round.
- Ribs (food cans)
- Rings pressed into the body for strength. A paper label sits over them.
- Lid
- A seamed end on food cans; a push-on or slip lid on tins and tubes. Can be printed on tins and tubes.
- Overcap (aerosols)
- The plastic cap over the valve. Optional in the studio.
- Label or wrap
- The printed sheet that wraps the body. On paper tubes, it is part of the tube itself.
How to size it
- Choose a stock container first: tins and cans come in set diameters from the maker.
- Measure diameter (or width for square tins) and height, and enter them in the studio.
- For a wrap label, allow about 3.14 x the diameter plus overlap, and keep clear of the top and bottom seams.
- If you print the lid top, measure its diameter and keep artwork inside the rolled edge.
| For | Size (L x W x H) |
|---|---|
| Food can, 400 g | about 73 mm across, 110 mm tall |
| Round gift or tea tin | about 100 mm across, 120 mm tall |
| Paper tube for tea or gifts | about 75 mm across, 160 mm tall |
Materials and finishes
- Tinplate or aluminium
- Food cans, tea and biscuit tins, aerosols. Strong and a full barrier to light and air.
- Paperboard tube with a printed wrap
- Tea, spices, gifts and dry goods. Lighter, and easier to print in small runs. Food-grade liners are available for loose food.
Finishes
- Printed tinplate (lithographed)
- Gift and festive tins printed on the metal before it is formed.
- Paper label
- The usual finish for food cans, applied after filling.
Mistakes to avoid
- Artwork running into the seams at the top and bottom of a can, which are covered or distorted.
- Printing a food can label without leaving room for the batch code and dates your filler adds.
- Ordering custom-printed tins in a quantity far above what you can sell. Printed metal usually has high minimums; a label on a stock tin is easier to start with.
How to make it in the studio
- Open it. Press Customise this aerosol spray can. It opens in the 3D studio at 53 x 200 mm.

- Add your design. In the Design panel, upload your logo or artwork: it goes on the front first. Pick other faces to add colours, text or images to each.

- Download. The Download panel gives you the print template first, then mockup images for your store or social posts.
