Parts of a lanyard and badge
A lanyard and badge is standard kit for events, conferences, offices and schools: the badge says who someone is, and the printed strap carries the event or brand all day. The studio shows a strap in 15, 20 or 25 mm widths with a clip and a CR80 badge card (the size of a bank card), portrait or landscape. You design the badge front and back and the full length of the strap.
- Strap
- The printed ribbon. In the studio it is laid out along its full length on the "top" face.
- Clip or hook
- Joins the strap to the badge. Many event lanyards add a safety breakaway near the neck.
- Badge front
- Name, role, company, photo or QR code.
- Badge back
- Schedule, map, Wi-Fi details or sponsor logos.
- Slot
- The punched slot at the top of the badge for the clip. Keep text clear of it.
How to size it
- Pick the strap width: 15 mm suits a simple logo, 20 mm is the common choice, and 25 mm gives room for a name and a pattern.
- Keep strap logos at most a few millimetres narrower than the strap, and repeat them along its length so they show whichever way it hangs.
- The badge is CR80, 54 x 86 mm. Add 2 to 3 mm bleed and keep text 4 mm inside the edge and clear of the slot.
- Make the name on a badge large enough to read from a step away: around 18 to 24 pt is a sensible start.
| For | Size (L x W x H) |
|---|---|
| Badge card (CR80) | 54 x 86 mm (the same size as a bank or ID card) |
| Strap widths | 15, 20 or 25 mm |
Materials and finishes
- Polyester strap, screen printed
- One or two flat colours, such as a logo and a name repeated. Simple and common.
- Polyester strap, dye-sublimated
- Full colour, gradients and photos printed into the fabric, edge to edge.
- PVC badge card
- Durable, reusable badges such as staff ID cards.
- Card or paper badge in a holder
- One-off event badges printed in bulk and slipped into a clear holder.
Mistakes to avoid
- Printing the logo once on the strap: it ends up behind someone's neck. Repeat it along the length.
- Fine detail on a narrow strap: it blurs on fabric. Use a bold logo and short words.
- Text under the badge slot: the punch or the clip covers it.
- Forgetting a breakaway clip for crowded events and schools, where a pulled lanyard can hurt someone.
How to make it in the studio
- Open it. Press Customise this lanyard, landscape badge. It opens in the 3D studio at 54 x 480 x 25 mm.
- Set the size. In the Size panel, pick a preset or type your own measurements.
- Add your design. In the Design panel, upload your logo or artwork: it goes on the front first. Pick other faces to add colours, text or images to each.
- Check it in 3D. Turn the pack around. Switch to the flat print view to see the artwork on the print file.
- Download. The Download panel gives you the print template first, then mockup images for your store or social posts.
- Get it made. If you want a quote, send the design to packitmama from the Download panel, and we will reply personally.

CR80: 54 x 86 mm, the same as a bank card. Badge holders and card printers are made for it.
Portrait or landscape badge?
Portrait shows a name and photo well and hangs neatly; landscape fits longer names and company logos. Switch in the studio under Badge.
