Jam jar: what to know
A clear glass jar shows off jam, honey, pickle or chutney. It is set up here at 70 mm wide and 80 mm tall, a small food jar.
- Glass food jars usually take a twist-off metal lid. Order the jar and lid as a matched set.
- A label on part of the jar leaves the product visible; colour is often the best advertising.
- For oily products like pickle, use a film label that oil does not stain.
- Check the current FSSAI labelling and packaging requirements for what the jar must show.
Parts of a jar
A jar is a wide-mouth container with a lid: for pickles, jam, honey, ghee, spreads, creams and candles. The wide opening lets a spoon or finger in, and the lid often carries part of the brand. In the studio you choose a round, square or hexagonal jar, a screw, dome or tall lid (or none), a thin food wall or a thick cosmetic wall, and a wrap-around or front-and-back label.
- Body
- The container itself. The straight wall is the label area.
- Shoulder and finish
- The top of the jar and its thread, which the lid screws onto. The lid covers it.
- Lid
- Screw, dome or tall in the studio. You can print the lid top separately.
- Label panel
- Wrap-around or front and back. Its height is the Label height in the studio.
- Contents
- Empty, cream or candle wax in the studio, to show the jar filled.
How to size it
- Choose the capacity and pick a stock jar for it. Food jars are usually described by fill weight (200 g, 500 g), cosmetic jars by ml.
- Measure the jar width and height and the height of the straight wall, and enter them as Width, Height and Label height.
- For a wrap-around label, the length is about 3.14 x the diameter plus a few millimetres of overlap.
- Measure the lid top diameter if you want to print it, and keep the artwork a few millimetres inside the edge.
| For | Size (L x W x H) |
|---|---|
| Cosmetic cream | 30 to 50 ml (often a thick-walled jar) |
| Jam, honey, spreads | 200 to 250 g fill |
| Pickle, ghee | 400 to 500 g fill |
Materials and finishes
- Glass, clear or amber
- Food jars, pickles, jam, honey and candles. Clear shows the product; amber protects it from light.
- PET
- Light, shatterproof food and cosmetic jars, often for online orders.
- PP or HDPE
- Opaque cosmetic jars and creams.
- Ceramic
- Candles and premium home products; usually printed or labelled after firing.
Finishes
- BOPP film label
- Resists oil and moisture: the right choice for pickles, ghee and creams.
- Lid top print or sticker
- A logo on the lid helps when jars are stacked or seen from above on a shelf.
Mistakes to avoid
- Paper labels on oily products like pickle and ghee: oil soaks through and stains them.
- A label taller than the straight wall, which wrinkles at the shoulder or base.
- Lids that do not match the jar finish. Order lid and jar together from the same specification.
- Hot-filling a jar not made for it. Ask your supplier if the jar and lid are rated for the fill temperature.
How to make it in the studio
- Open it. Press Customise this jam jar. It opens in the 3D studio at 70 x 80 x 45 mm.
- Set the size. In the Size panel, pick a preset or type your own measurements.
- Add your design. In the Design panel, upload your logo or artwork: it goes on the front first. Pick other faces to add colours, text or images to each.
- Check it in 3D. Turn the pack around. Switch to the flat print view to see the artwork on the label.
- Download. The Download panel gives you the print template first, then mockup images for your store or social posts.
- Get it made. If you want a quote, send the design to packitmama from the Download panel, and we will reply personally.
Questions
Glass or plastic for pickles?
Glass is traditional and does not take on smells; PET is lighter and safer to ship. Both must be food-grade.
Can I print the lid?
Yes. Turn on Print the lid top and add artwork to the Top face.
